I have been a calligrapher since 1976. I do as much calligraphy as a job running the AUT graphic design department allows me. I originally studied art history and ancient history, and now do as much research into the history of calligraphy as possible when one is living several thousand kilometers from good resources. My calligraphy is largely improvised - Steven Skaggs' term 'jazz calligraphy' is a good one - except that I also like jazzing alphabet design, and I try to do as much with a pen as possible. I'm a calligrapher not a painter. I don't finish a lot of calligraphy to exhibition level, so this site is a way of combining my practice and experiments with comment - both on events and calligraphy itself - and put up an improvisational work created as near to every day as I can manage.
